![]() I feel like a proud mama when my artists get recognized for being so awesome... because they ARE! So proud of Tim Saunders and beyond lucky to have him as a part of the gallery. This guy is crazy talented and probably one of the nicest most humble people you're lucky enough to meet... or collect!! A hip new local Hawaii travel blog for the islands called Create In Hawaii wrote a great piece on Tim. They focus on the artistic little guy who is making their way through the world doing what they love and sharing it with others. Check it out.... Tim Saunders March 30, 2015 What do you create? I create metal and mixed media sculptures using reclaimed materials- mostly fish and waves… things I’d like to catch. My art is trash. What makes you different from others? I feel my pieces are unique because of what they are made from- found and salvaged materials that have personality. I look for texture, type, embossments, color… rust is always good. A lot of the material comes from abandoned or torn down plantation camp houses- real history. I don’t use templates so everything is hand drawn, cut and welded back together- straight out of my sketchbook- the real shape doesn’t come out until I start beating it and forming it… sometimes metal has a mind of it’s own with how it will bend so every piece truly is one of a kind. What's the story of how you began? I’ve always been a bit of a pack rat and I’ve been surfing and fishing since I was a kid so making waves and fish out of old junk seems to make sense. My grandmother started me crabbing and fishing at 7 or so, and my mom got me a surfboard when I was 11- both have been ingrained in me ever since. I’ve also always been super into art- from drawing to 3-D sculpture to mixed media creations, and I went to the Savannah College of Art and Design where I studied photography, art history and graphic design. I tried snow one winter in Tahoe but didn’t last long. While there, I worked with super talented metal artist Mike Okonowski who taught me the basics of welding and metalwork. A lot of fun but too cold! That was 15 years ago and I’ve been doing metal work off and on ever since. What are your personal favorite local businesses and products?
